How to Select a Mover |
Moving can be a very strenuous activity, both physically and emotionally. In order to be assured that your move will go smoothly from start to finish, it is imperative that you pick the most reputable and professional moving company you can find. When you hand over all your belongings to a mover, you are putting your total trust in that mover. You trust that the staff is competent and well-trained, that the truck is clean and well-maintained, and that the moving company will help you with any question or problem throughout the whole moving process.
What to ask:
- How long have you been in business?
Basic rule of thumb is that a reputable mover should have at least three years under their belt. They also should be licensed and insured.
- Do you have references?
Satisfied customers are the best way to gauge the quality of the moving company that you hope to do business with. Also ask for the records at the Better Business Bureau or local Chamber of Commerce to find out the amount of complaints registered.
- Are you are member of AMSA (American Moving and Storage Association)?
AMSA is a non-profit trade association with more than 3,000 moving companies as members. Basically, AMSA's purpose is to create a standard amongst movers in the relocation industry. As a member, each mover must be licensed and work towards the "Code of Ethics" of AMSA. Because AMSA holds its members to such a high standard of excellence, you can be safe in knowing that the moving company is honest, legal, and efficient in their service. You can view their website to find helpful information or see their solid group of member companies. www.moving.org
- Do you assign a personal relocation expert to our move in order to offer suggestions on how to make the move easier?
Many companies go above and beyond the call of duty by assigning a moving expert to your move. This expert will give you the tips you need to keep your sanity throughout the moving process. A mover who cares about customer service and creating a positive experience will do all they can to help you.
- How do you estimate the job?
For long distance moves, the estimate is based on the number of pounds being moved along with the distance. American Pro also provides a guaranteed price based on the items to be moved.
- What is a binding estimate?
A binding estimate or binding cost of service specifies in advance the precise cost of the move based on the services requested or deemed necessary at the time of the estimate. If additional services are requested or required at the origin or destination (such as a shuttle or long carry), the total cost will increase. Binding estimates are valid for the time period specified, up to 60 days.
If you add items to be moved or require additional services, such as packing, between the time of the estimate and the time of your move, there will be additional charges. An addendum providing for these additional charges will be prepared.
- What kind of liability insurance do you provide?
Your protection from the movers is limited to a certain number of cents per pound. You may purchase “full value protection”, which covers replacement of the item minus deductibles.
- What damages are not covered?
Movers often do not cover: operating condition of appliances and electronics; missing items not on the inventory list; damages not documented upon delivery; and money, jewelry, and other valuables. Also, movers may not be held responsible for broken glassware or other fragile items, unless packed by them.
Other pertinent questions:
- Do you have a minimum charge?
- Are there extra charges for larger items such as pianos, large screen televisions, or extra flights of stairs?
- Is there an extra charge for evenings or weekends?
- What types of payment options do you offer?
- Do they have full-time employees or use temps and day laborers?
- What kind of training have your movers and drivers completed?
